About Swag
The action group was initially formed as a result of an application by AMEC to erect 28 x 330ft high wind turbines overlooking the village of Edinbane. A short while later this was joined by an application by RDC to erect a further 14 x 330ft high wind turbines on the neighbouring Ben Aketil. A discussion for a windfarm at Glendale was withdrawn. There are at least two more windfarm proposals at Sleat and Skeabost being discussed in private. We also believe that there are plans to increase the capacity of the grid through Skye by installing a 400kv supergrid across the island. This would mean a string of pylons twice the size of any existing ones.
Skye is world famous for its unspoiled scenery and peaceful way of life. All who live and work here will suffer adverse effects should any windfarms be erected, crofters and tourism operators alike. We aim to raise public awareness of the proposed windfarms and to inform the world of the detrimental effects they are likely to have on the fragile environment and the tourism-dependent economy of this very special place.
We also aim to expose any misinformation being provided by wind supporters particularly with regard to emission savings and the number of homes windfarms can power.
